Newfoundland & Labrador’s
Burin Peninsula
About the Heritage Run Tourism Association
(HRTA established 1992)
Heritage Run tourism operators, Provincial and Federal government departments partnered
from 1986 to 1992 under the Burin Peninsula Tourism Association.
Additional partnerships grew to include Eastern NL, and St. Pierre & Miquelon tourism
associations.
In 1997 HRTA began staffing visitor information centres (VIC) through various government
programs. By 2009, annual membership fees plus annual per capita levies from the five largest
towns: Burin, Fortune, Grand Bank, Marystown and St. Lawrence, have provided resources for
a full-time/part-time executive director/ VIC manager. The HRTA is run by a regional volunteer
Board from tourism business, natural/cultural/heritage and development associations
backgrounds. Several directors serve on other regional, eastern regional and provincial tourism
boards.
The Mission of the Heritage Run Tourism Association:
1.
To promote the Burin Peninsula to both resident and non-resident markets
2.
To profile the Burin Peninsula's unique character and anchor attractions, including St.
Pierre & Miquelon from a national and international perspective.
3.
To identify and help foster further development of anchor attractions on the Burin
Peninsula.
4.
To encourage tourism packaging and partnerships both on and off the Burin Peninsula.
To fulfill its mandate, HRTA operates three visitor information centres (VIC):
•
Goobies Visitor Information Centre is located on the Trans Canada Highway adjacent to
route 210 entrance to the Burin Peninsula
•
Marystown Visitor Information Centre is located on route 210 in Marystown, across from
WalMart
•
Fortune Visitor Information Centre is located in Fortune inside the Geology Centre
across from the St. Pierre & Miquelon ferry terminal
